découvrez comment reconnaître le style restauration grâce à nos conseils et astuces pour identifier ses caractéristiques uniques.

How to recognize the Restoration style ? The Restoration style took place under the reign of Louis XVIII. It was a period marked by the influence of many trends in furniture and ornamentation. In particular, it is characterized by a return to straight, symmetrical and geometric lines. And this in contrast to the curves and baroque ornaments of the previous era.

How to recognize Restoration-style furniture ? Restoration-style furniture was often made in solid wood species such as oak, beech, walnut or cherry. But one can also find pieces veneered in mahogany, ebony or rosewood. Marquetry is a technique used at this time. And one can find furniture veneered with precious woods or porcelain medallions.

It is true that the cabinetmaker-sculptors of the time are famous for their meticulous work. And their refined gilt bronzes such as armrests, handles, fluting and acanthus leaves. The most frequent decorative motifs in Restoration are medallions, lozenges and geometric squares, while the curves and rocaille typical of the rococo style are abandoned. Restoration-style furniture was designed to be functional and comfortable in the interiors of the time and sofas, armchairs, bergères and chairs were often upholstered in velvet or another high-quality fabric.

Among the characteristics of the Restoration style are the straight and symmetrical lines of the furniture, the use of solid wood and veneered wood, as well as the abandonment of curves and baroque ornaments. Furniture is often decorated with marquetry and gilt bronzes. And geometric motifs are favored over organic motifs.

A return to the roots of the Renaissance

In the end, the Restoration style was a return to the roots of the Renaissance. Where functionality took precedence over ornamentation. Moreover, it is considered a transitional movement between the Empire style and the Louis-Philippe style.

And it took its place in the evolution of cabinetmaking and decorative art until the mid-19th century. Thus, if your piece of furniture shows characteristics such as straight lines, geometric motifs, solid wood, marquetry and gilt bronzes and sometimes with gold leaf. It could very well be a Restoration-style piece of furniture.

The Louis Philippe style, in chronological order, followed Restoration furniture.
